Career Advice from the 'Everyday Expert' (People Just Like You) |

Self Help, Work Help |
The greatest compliment I receive from my business consulting clients is that more often than not I don't provide work solutions, I just ask the right questions because the answers truly are within everybody.
Message to my Boss
I know that being a manager you sometimes have to keep things in confidence but I often find it difficult to perform well in my job when I hear about a decision that would impact what I’m doing after I’ve completed the task. I need to know what’s going on, I don’t need to know company secrets, but please take the time to talk to me.

Message to my Colleague
When I get in the elevator with you take the time to look at me and say, “Hello.” It’s not hard to be pleasant and acknowledge people.

Message to my Team Member
My management style is easy going and trusting. However, I don’t appreciate it when you take advantage of my flexibility. I don’t stand over your shoulder every minute of the day because I trust you to do your work. But when I see you spending a good part of the day surfing the Net and on Hotmail I’m put in the difficult situation of having to say something to you which then creates animosity between us as you find it challenging to see your part in the situation and why the discussion came about. Keep things within limit, excel at what you do and we can both be happy. If you’re bored, let’s work on improving the situation.

Message to my company
Month after month we fail to make budget, but instead of looking at what we’re doing wrong and adjusting the strategy, the Senior Management Team are cutting costs and head count so they can report to head office that we’re ‘making money’. That’s not ‘making money’, that’s false economy. You don’t care that good people are leaving because you’ve still got your jobs. And you don’t understand that as people go those who are left behind are burdened with their work, but that doesn’t affect you either because you’re not doing it. Stop taking the easy way out, I feel like your main aim is to protect yourselves, but you’re getting paid the big bucks to take responsibility and achieve the company’s objectives. If you can’t do it, please leave and let someone who can make a difference in.
